The eastern tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh are recorded, along with their herds and their victories when they “cried out to God in the battle.” Yet the chapter ends soberly: because they were unfaithful and worshiped the gods of the peoples around them, God stirred up the Assyrians to carry them into exile, a warning woven into the family record.
